Perhaps to distinguish them from "strumpets tampons"?
Perhaps he realised he'd bought the wrong kind.
For ladies periods.
While it's definitely an obscure usage, "tampon" is also used in a non-gendered manner to refer to refer to a type of wound packing.
There are some men who need to use tampons on occasion, but as far as I'm aware they have to use the ladies kind out of a general lack of other options.
T recall a story involving a leading British actor along those lines, although it's quite possibly apocryphal.
