When did "om nom nom" replace "yum yum" exactly? And where did it come from? I'm guessing it's around ten years ago but I have no idea where it came from and how it gained popularity.

Hmm. The cookie monster makes eating noises, but I hadn't thought they were quite as distinct as the current om nom nom. (I thought the massive popularity dated from cornkitty, but I could be wrong!)

I thought it was much more recent than ten years - maybe three or four - and lolcat derived, but I may be wrong!

agreed. I always thought it was a Lolcat thing.

That is what I thought too. But I agree.

Thinking about it I can imagine the Cookie Monster saying "Nom Nom Nom" in the same way as chickens go "cluck cluck" and frogs go "gribbit".

Cookie monster was around when I was a kid, and we didn't say "om nom nom" back then.

I thought it was lolcats too.

Presumably "I can has ... " has similar roots.

"I can haz cheezburger?" was the first lolcat AFAIK.

It got a recent upswing in popularity in Maelstrom when it was discovered that the gigantic undead monstrosity eating peoples ships was called the "Nom Nom Nom" on some of the reports.
