Housewarming

I want to do the housewarming thing. Only I feel horribly inexperienced in this kind of stuff and I'm not quite sure where to start. I've never thrown a party. Ever.

So far the plan is a very vague "Maybe I could have a barbecue in August". So taking that as a starting point, help me out, here. Would you come to a barbecue one weekend in Peterborough? Would it make a difference to you if I offered crash space? I can comfortably put up about five people (double bed, double bottom bunk, single upper bunk), more as the comfort decreases (sofa, floorspace). There is a B&B at the end of the road that we could also make use of. Does this sound like a good plan? If not what would you recommend?

Would you come to a barbecue one weekend in Peterborough?

As long as you don't have it on the weekend of the Unicon (10th) or Caption (17th), yes.

Would it make a difference to you if I offered crash space?

It would mean I could stay later, but the absence wouldn't mean I wouldn't come.

You are too conservative in the amount of discomfort fans will put up with at a party.

There is a B&B at the end of the road that we could also make use of.

And this solves the problem for those who won't put up with that much discomfort.

Does this sound like a good plan?

Yes.

Party! Party! Party!

Whoops didn't mean to scare you. You've never thrown one, but surely you've been to fan thrown arties before? There are many of us who still just need enough space to lay out the sleeping bag. Peterborough is easy to get to as well, or the centre of the known Universe if you are Mr Cox.

Ask Nolly, he's had a fair few BBQs in recent years and can probably give you some tips. My experience is out of date and goes back to West Norwood Free Festival days, first floor flats aren't really condusive to BBQing or partying at all for that matter.

Re: Party! Party! Party!

but surely you've been to fan thrown parties before?

Nope. I'm new. Or nobody loves me. Or something. Couple of room parties and that's about it. I went to ang_grrr's barbecue but she keeps peering at people suspiciously and saying "What do you mean, I'm part of fandom?" so I don't think she counts.

yep, if it's not Contexxt and not the bank holiday I'll be there! And am happy to B&B, thus freeing floor space for young folk with high discomfort thresholds.

I'd come. You know, if I was invited and all that.

And, for maximum comfort levels, I'd probably stay in Corby with Pete's parents. He might even decide that he wants to come. Stranger things have happenned.

I'm sure Simon and I would love to come if we can. Peterborough is at least on the right side of London for us, unlike Fleet...

I'm okay with crash space, assuming you don't want me to pitch a tent in your possibly non-existent garden.

Okay, now I'm wondering how I'd have a barbecue without a garden. And also thinking I probably don't want to know.

On the Pitching of Tents

August is already somewhat full. So it would depend.

The first weekend is the Cambridge Folk Festival and the second is Cropredy; we may have to duck out of one or both of them for weddings as it is.

The 17th is definitely a wedding.

The 24th is in the middle of our summer holidays, but as our summer holidays this year will almost certainly involve relatives, bikes and tents rather than, say, going abroad we might well be able to fit in a party in Peterborough

The 31st has nothing at present.

How big is your garden? If we came we'd definitely be up for pitching a tent in it.

Ooh yeh. But not before I get back from Australia on 10 August!! (I think that means that if you want to invite me, swisstone and tamaranth, you can only have it on the 24th Aug :-) see isn't it easy to have decisions made for you??!!)

Scrubby yards/;gardens are ideal for barbecues - you can always have a bit of scorched earth policy at the end and clear those weeds pronto :-) (sounds like the sort of thing ZZ9/Noel would enjoy doing!)

24 August

Oooh yes - Birthday birthday birthday!

(Deleted comment)
Okay, the 31st is looking like a likely date, but only if it's not just after my tooth extraction. I'll check tonight.

Next I have to figure out how to compile an invite list properly. And fan-proof the house.

Raz, Sin, Gavin & other friend list people - I know all these fan types are probably scaring you but you're invited, too, if you can make it.

I (and mindygoth) would be keen to come along and actually meet some people :)
However (being the great wuss that I am) I always have to ask ahead as to the compatability of party housinge and non-smokers...

Bugger, that's the date I can't do!
